Doing some research before connecting to the ‘Net' may net you some rewards. Making an informed decision in choosing an Internet Service Provider is less difficult than you might imagine it to be. Knowing what services to look for and how to find them can be just a matter of following some basic rules. • Brand Name -With thousands of ISPs available from coast to coast, choose someone you know and trust. In the absence of knowledge, choose a service that is physically accessible to you and visit them. Most local area ISPs are accessible to their customers to walk in and have a chat. Many are staffed with personable, knowledgeable Internet mechanics who can troubleshoot virtually any problem. A few actually will visit you in your home. • Security - Look for an ISP that has a strict privacy policy so you can be sure your personal information will be safe. Local area ISPs have a long track record of secure confidential service. • Technical Support - look for an ISP that offers a high degree of customer care and technical support. Smaller local area ISPs are close knit organizations whose personnel care deeply about efficiency of operations and subscriber satisfaction. • Features-Choose an ISP that offers features and services you want - including advanced services for businesses and e-Commerce sites. • Speed and Reliability - Since you’ll be downloading information from the Web, look for an ISP that has a strong record of providing reliable, speedy access and downloads. • Local Access Numbers (POPs) - Be certain your telephone access to the net is a local call from your site. Check out the following (Florida Panhandle Area) local Internet Services. Gulf Coast Internet Inc. SCTI ( in Freeport, FL) and DFSI ( in Defuniak Springs, FL) All of these plus more not mentioned here provide high quality dial-up services to the Gulf Coast Computing Magazine circulation area. Not surprisingly, these same ISPs meet or exceed all criterion necessary to provide you with efficient connectivity, technical savvy and in many cases, personalized instruction for new Internet surfers.
